Project Description

This apartment development was constructed on the site of an old Mercury Energy building in suburban Auckland, applying principles of adaptive reuse in order to create a unique residential solution utilising the existing structure.

Project Goals

To deliver a unique and modern take on high density residential dwellings which could be popular in New Zealand’s standalone house focused market.

Project Outcomes

107 apartments across two five-storey towers, constructed between January 2014 and March 2016. The Thompson Park Apartment complex won a Multi-Unit Dwelling award for providing “a credible solution to a complex pressing problem and a step in the evolution of urban living in New Zealand”.

Project Features

  • Structural elements involved structural steel, precast concrete and logicwall.
  • Building envelope of aluminium joinery, cedar and ACP.
  • Dark louvres and cedar highlights used to define a strong entranceway and break up horizontal form of the building.
  • Light, scenery and privacy were key considerations of the generous communal areas.
